The controls normally live under an information-and-permissions area in Accounts Center, but the exact labels can differ by account, region, client, and rollout.
This matters in 2026 because Meta has announced a gradual transition from Accounts Center to an updated Meta Account experience. You may see either name. Use the concepts below to find the current control instead of relying on an old screenshot or an exact menu sequence.
The official export is not a general button for downloading any other profile's followers as CSV.
What the official archive covers
The workflow lets the signed-in account holder choose an account, a set of information, a date range, a delivery destination, and the formats currently offered by Meta. The resulting archive may include relationship information such as Followers or Following when those categories are available for the selected Instagram profile.
The main advantages are first-party provenance and an account-owner scope. The trade-offs are preparation time, changing file structures, and the need to inspect the delivered archive rather than expecting a fixed CSV or XLSX.
Conceptual export steps
- Sign in on a safe device to the Instagram account you own or are authorized to manage.
- Open the current centralized account settings. It may be labeled Accounts Center or Meta Account.
- Find the information-and-permissions area, then locate the current export or download-information control.
- Select the intended Instagram profile. If several Meta profiles are connected, do not assume the highlighted account is correct.
- Choose all information or a smaller set. If the current category list includes Followers, Following, Connections, or an equivalent relationship category, select only what the task needs.
- Choose export to device, a date range, and one of the formats the current interface offers.
- Submit the request and wait for Meta's notification. Avoid creating several indistinguishable requests.
- Download the archive, retain the original compressed file, and record the account, requested scope, format, request date, and download date.
Meta's specific Instagram help page may require authentication. If a label above is missing, recheck the signed-in account, the rollout, and the current official help—not a third-party “recovery” service that asks for credentials or payment.
How to verify Followers and Following in the archive
After downloading:
- Confirm the archive belongs to the intended Instagram profile.
- Keep the untouched ZIP and make a separate working copy.
- Search the extracted directory for
followers,following,connections, or the relationship-category label used in the request. - Record filenames, the number of parts, file formats, and parseable rows in every part.
- Check whether the selected date range could have narrowed the result.
- Treat a difference between archive rows and the current Instagram count as a review item, not immediate proof of a platform defect.
Community reports mention filenames such as followers_1.json and following.json, along with missing or unexpected rows. Those reports show why verification is necessary. They do not establish a permanent filename contract, a universal defect, or one cause for every mismatch.
HTML, JSON, CSV, and XLSX are different
If the current Meta interface offers HTML and JSON, HTML is generally easier to browse manually while JSON is more suitable for structured transformation. Always verify the actual options and delivered files for your account.

Limits of the official path
- It is for information associated with an account the signed-in person owns or manages, not arbitrary third-party profile export.
- Accounts Center/Meta Account labels, menu order, categories, formats, preparation time, and download availability can change.
- The archive is not guaranteed to use a stable filename or JSON schema.
- One current archive is not scheduled monitoring or a complete historical unfollower log.
- A timestamp in a relationship JSON file should not be labeled as a follow or unfollow event time until its meaning is verified.
- Never give a password, code, or recovery payment to a stranger claiming they can unlock the export.
