How to Back Up Instagram Followers and Following
Save reviewable Instagram Followers and Following snapshots, label their scope, and avoid mistaking a current-list backup for follow or unfollow history.
On This Page
Backing up Instagram Followers and Following means saving account-level rows you can reopen later—not taking a screenshot of two profile totals. Keep the two directions separate, record the source profile, date, row ceiling, confirmed rows, and terminal state, and preserve the original file before adding formulas.
For an account you control, check Instagram's account-information export first. For a current list visible to your browser session, a user-started CSV or XLSX export can create a bounded snapshot. Neither method creates a continuous follow/unfollow event log.
Decide what you are backing up
A follower-count screenshot cannot identify the accounts behind the number. One account-level file shows one observed state; it does not reveal events before that file existed.
What a Web Tidy list snapshot contains
Instagram Follower Exporter handles one profile and one direction per user-started task:
- Followers or Following;
- 100, 200, 500, or 1,000 confirmed-row ceilings;
- CSV or native XLSX;
- duplicate removal by exported account ID, enabled by default;
- explicit progress and terminal states.
Both formats use the same 14-column order:
id, pk, username, profileUrl, fullName, profilePicUrl, isVerified,
followedByViewer, requestedByViewer, audience, sourceProfile,
sourceProfileUrl, collectedAt, rowIndexcollectedAt is local normalization time, not the time an account followed or unfollowed. rowIndex is local output order, not an Instagram rank or relationship timestamp.
Step-by-step backup workflow
- Identify the profile. Record its handle or URL and whether you control it or merely have current access to it.
- Back up each direction separately. Run one Followers task and, if needed, a second Following task.
- Fix the scope. Choose 100, 200, 500, or 1,000 rows. Reuse the same ceiling and deduplication setting for future comparisons.
- Check the terminal state and download. A run may move through validating, running, paused, and stopping before completed, partial, or failed. Then download CSV or XLSX; the product does not export JSON.
- Keep the original unchanged. Make a working copy for formulas, sorting, or cleanup.
- Write a small backup manifest. Record the profile, Audience, date, ceiling, confirmed rows, terminal state, format, and filename.
- Test the file. Reopen it, confirm the 14 columns, and make sure long identifiers were not converted to scientific notation.
Use filenames that preserve the scope:
instagram-@account-followers-2026-08-30-1000rows-completed.xlsx
instagram-@account-following-2026-08-30-1000rows-completed.xlsxYour manifest can be as small as:
sourceProfile: @account
audience: followers
requestedCeiling: 1000
confirmedRows: 842
terminalState: completed
format: xlsx
collectedDate: 2026-08-30
notes: untouched original; analysis uses a copyVerify the backup before relying on it
Web Tidy History keeps up to 20 recent terminal tasks so an available result can be reopened. It is not a long-term backup service. Download anything you need to retain and manage it under your own retention and deletion rules.
Choose a manual backup cadence
- Save a snapshot before and after a campaign to create one bounded review window.
- Save monthly for lower file-management overhead.
- Save weekly for a narrower observation window.
- Save once to establish a baseline; no change can be measured until another comparable snapshot exists.
Web Tidy does not schedule runs, monitor profiles in the background, or send unfollower alerts. More frequent files narrow the observation window, but the later collectedAt value still is not the exact relationship-event time.
Limits and stop conditions
The extension only works with a target the current Instagram session can access. It does not bypass private profiles, login, challenges, rate limits, unavailable profiles, or lost page context. Those conditions stop the task. Only transient network or HTTP 5xx failures receive bounded retries, at most three per request.
The 100/200/500/1,000 choices are per-run ceilings. The product does not promise unlimited or complete coverage, JSON output, scheduled monitoring, CRM sync, contact enrichment, automated follows/unfollows/messages, or access-control bypasses.
Accessible data is not automatically permission to profile, contact, or redistribute people. This guide is operational, not legal advice; confirm your authority, purpose, retention period, and applicable rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can one Followers backup show who unfollowed me?
No. It records one observed state. Historical change needs an older comparable Followers file.
Can Followers and Following live in the same backup folder?
Yes, but keep them as clearly named files or worksheets and record each direction and terminal state.
What if the account has more than 1,000 followers?
The current product ceiling is 1,000 confirmed rows per run. Treat the result as a bounded snapshot, not a complete account backup.
Is local History my backup?
No. It keeps at most 20 recent terminal tasks. Your downloaded files are the artifacts you control.
Does the product back up the lists automatically every day?
No. Every run is started by the user.
